Cork AND Wood
Back to the Future Technology
Oftentimes people see the wood shells and are taken by their beauty. They don't even realize there is cork inside if they are shy about handling the helmet. Form becomes a distraction from function.
In spite of this most energy at Coyle is focused on function. Both the wood shell AND the cork liners are patent pending, unprecedented technologies using ancient materials. The wood has been shown in both materials testing and prototype testing to absorb impact energy more readily than the ABS or polycarbonate shells most common in bike helmets. The cork has been tested relative to the EPS foam material it replaces. By laser cutting it into a honeycombed structure it can be adapted to absorb energy at various impact levels.
